Q: Why are only a few shark sightings posted?
A: All of the shark sightings posted in the application are provided by the SharkWatch! user community, not by Fortuna Mobile. Because SharkWatch! is a relatively new application, it will take some time before several sightings are posted. Being a social networking application, it is up to the SharkWatch! user community to make the shark sightings feature of the application as up to date and informative as possible.
Q: When I select the Nearby tab in the shark Sightings feature, the app lists postings for sightings that occurred several miles away, not "nearby" at all. Why is that?
A: Selecting the Nearby tab in the shark Sightings feature lists user sightings in order by distance from your current location. As time goes on, it is our hope that the shark Sightings feature will be full of first-hand shark sighting information, and that you'll find the nearby sightings truly are nearby.
Q: Why aren't the locations of historical shark attacks included in the Sightings feature?
A: Data concerning exactly where historical shark attack incidents have occurred is not available for our use at this time. As such, we cannot pinpoint the locations of shark attack incidents on the map under Sightings. We did not want to post details for accounts under the Sightings feature that could not be mapped accurately. However, we encourage the SharkWatch! user community to post accurate information regarding shark attacks they are aware of.
Q: Can I remove a shark sighting posting I've entered?
A: Absolutely! Just select the My tab under the Sightings feature, where you'll find each of the postings you've entered. Swipe your finger to the right over the posting you would like to delete, then select the delete button that appears. All of the information you've entered for that posting will be deleted from the system.
Q: Can I edit posting after I've saved it into the app?
A: Yes! As a new feature of SharkWatch! Version 2.0, users can now edit their shark sighting postings. Select the My tab under the Sightings feature, where you'll find each of the postings you've entered. Select the button in the top right-hand corner labeled "Edit". You'll be presented with a screen where you'll be able to edit the individual fields of your posting, and re-save the data.
Q: I know of a shark attack that doesn't appear in the Global Attacks feature of the app. Why is that?
A: All of the global shark attack information presented in the app is obtained from the Shark Research Institute Global Shark Attack File (GSAF). If the details of a shark attack incident are not present in the Global Attacks feature of the app, it is because the GSAF has not yet been made aware of the attack. The GSAF encourages you to participate in shark/human interaction research by reporting shark attack incidents to the GSAF.
Q: Why do I have to provide my email address in order to register and view the shark Sightings feature of the app? How will my email address be used?
A: Registering is required to view the posts in the Sightings feature so that information pertaining to sightings you've posted or sightings you've marked as Favorites can be saved into the system. Your email address is required for the registering process so that we can provide you with your password in a secure way, should you forget it. Fortuna Mobile will in no way use your email address for any reason other than direct communication with you, and will not distribute your email address to third parties.
Q: Where can I learn about shark conservation?
A: Check out the following websites of a few of the many shark research and conservation organizations helping to promote shark public awareness:
